At one time or another, I’d guess that everyone has been touched by depression.
Some of us end up battling with it more than others.
I personally know depression from all sides. I’ve experienced it myself & have had several close family members who’ve had to deal with it.
I know that it’s debilitating & it can make you anxious b/c you’re so desperate to just get out of that feeling of hopelessness. There are many different levels & shades of depression & all may need to be dealt with differently.
BUT whatever method is your chosen method to help heal & deal, I feel any sound holistic healthy approach can be amplified & enhanced through the use of energy work & crystals. So this is the perfect spot for my…
BORING DISCLAIMER: I think you already know that I’m not a doctor & am not giving medical advice. I feel crystals should be used as a compliment to & not as a replacement for regular medical and/or psychological care & consultation.
Here’s a recent question I received:
Q: I’ve been searching all over the internet for depression specific crystal suggestions. Do you have a go-to crystal prescription for depression?
Good Question! Let’s dive in …
Crystals for Depression
Now the first suggestion I have is a mineral. As I teach in my Certified Crystal Healer Course, all minerals are crystals at the microscopic level…even if you can’t see the crystals with the naked eye. So this pick, it’s a common one. Most of us have it in one way, in one form of jewelry or another…
Yellow Gold
Yellow gold is great for busting us out of depression. It has a very strong male energy and along with that strong-push-male energy, it has a very motivating kind of energy, which is usually just what we need to get us out of that depressed feeling.
Ocean Jasper
In the above video, I have ocean jasper in this nice little pendant coupled with peridot.
Ocean Jasper is great for coping with change.
Many times big changes in our lives are what precipitates or causes depression. Ocean Jasper gives you the strength to cope with that change.
It’s also is about bringing in that element of water; it has a lot of water energy so it’s about renewal. If you need to renew what’s going on in your life, to get over this depression period, then ocean jasper helps bring in that washing away cleansing and renewal energy.
Citrine
Citrine is a commonly-recommended crystal for depression. It’s one that I’ve talked about often. Citrine comes in handy for a lot of life’s little curve balls and it’s known as a “happy stone”.
It helps bring in a happy sunny disposition; happy energy. It doesn’t need to be a natural Citrine like these shown below:
You can choose to work with the heat-treated variety just as well…
I do always say, though, that the natural citrine packs a way more powerful punch than the treated variety. I’ve talk about that before so you can check out some of my other videos on citrine and why it’s heated and what that does.
It’s not a bad thing though at all.
Amber
I can’t recommend this one enough.
However, I do have to caution that it is becoming relatively difficult to find natural true amber.
I was given an amber gift and it turned out to be a resin, it was totally plastic. 🙁 So again, here’s a link to my blog post on how to tell the difference between real amber and fake amber.
So anyway…amber is wonderful for chasing the blues away.
Amber helps with S.A.D.; seasonal affective disorder. Many of us who experience a lack of sunlight or lack of vitamin D fall into a winter depression during the colder winter months…most especially if you live in a climate where the winter season is very extreme or long. So if you do fall victim to that perhaps wearing some amber jewelry (authentic amber jewelry) can really help you out with the S.A.D. and coping with that.
Rose Quartz
My next pick for working through depression is Rose Quartz and I recently did a video all about rose quartz.
Rose quartz is wonderful for any kind of emotional healing, compassion, and just general “feel great” energy. ♥
Tiger’s Eye
And my last pick for crystals and stones to work with your depression is tiger’s eye. In my video you’ll notice I’m actually wearing some tiger’s eye rings. ?
Tiger’s eye gives us strength & it helps us balance in the extremes. You know, if you’re really having a hard bout of depression if you’re in the really extreme lows of the lows, tiger’s eye is a good one to go to.
It’s also got a very protective quality, giving you the strength that you need to help balance out so that you’re not in the throes of the extremes. It’s a great stone to work with for someone affected by bipolar disorder; that is dealing with the extremes (extreme highs and extreme lows).
Now Let’s TAWK SCIENCE!
In a scientific experiment published in 1993, a quartz crystal presented to depressed test subjects improved long-term healing when compared to a placebo fake glass crystal.
70% continued improvement with the quartz crystal vs. 30% continued improvement with those presented with the placebo. BOOO-YAH!
This is HUGE!
That’s actually 2x as good as antidepressants…w/o the nasty side effects. Not saying that you should dump your antidepressants (as they do have their place) but to have a powerful tool available to you like that in the form of a crystal?! HUGE.
First, I want to be sure to add in the non-crystal tips that I feel you should tap into alongside crystal healing b/c it’s recommend over & over again…& I know it worked for me:
- Get regular exercise, consistently. Get those endorphins flowing. Helps so much with hormone balancing! I know it may feel like the very last thing you want to do, but trust me…it helps so very much!
- Get your hormones checked & safely balanced with a natural bio-identical alternative (especially if you’re in hormone-decline years {can start as early as age 35}…yes, this applies to males also!)
- If you tend towards a lack of sleep, get caught up. Makes a big difference.
- Eat clean! Eating junk is only hurting you, so clean up that diet.
Depression-Busting Crystal Tips
1. Crystal Meditation – Self-Medicate? No, Self-Meditate! Grab your fav. crystal from my above list, put on a guided meditation (like this one) and go relax for about 15 min. I guarantee you’ll feel much better afterwards.
2. Adopt good sleep habits with the help of crystals
3. Have a Berry Banana Depression Busting Smoothie at least 4 times/week (Great for mood boosting & energy!); High in vitamin C, omega 3, fiber, anti-oxidants, amino acids, protein & potassium, all of which help to boost your brain function & beat the blues away.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 Cup Organic Frozen Berries
- 1/2 Cup Citrine Gem Elixir Water (just drop a citrine stone into distilled water overnight)
- 1 Small Organic Banana
- 1 tsp colloidal gold
- 1 Tbsp. organic local (if possible) raw honey
- 1 Tbsp. silica (yep, same stuff quartz crystals are made of!)
- 1 Tbsp. local (if possible) Bee Pollen
- 2 Tbsp. Hemp Protein Powder
4. Good Mood Mojo Bag: Work with a chosen crystal from above to kill the ANTs (automatic negative thoughts; coined by Dr. Daniel Amen) that fuel depression.
Negative thinking patterns provide the gas for anxiety & depression, not to mention that thoughts become things! Eeeek. Create a mojo kit just for this! Grab a little bag of some sort, add in a crystal or 2 then add in some Jasmine, Roman Chamomile, Mandarin essential oils along with a mix of lemon balm & lavender herbs. Carry it around with you in your pocket.
BAM! You’ll see. 😉
5. Anti-Depression Gem Elixir Tea (with any herbs…if you’re taking any antidepressants be sure to check with your Dr. first!):
Ingredients:
- Fill a small tea infuser ball with…
- St. John’s Wort organic herb
- Siberian Ginseng organic herb
- Citrine & Tiger’s Eye tumbled stones…yep, plop them right in a few minutes after you’ve made your tea so it’s not too hot.
- Optional: sweeten it up a bit with some Raw Organic Honey
6. Blues-Busting Stress Release Bath: Soak it up with a few drops of lavender essential oil, then drop in an amber, rose quartz & citrine tumbled stones. Ahhhh, relaxing & mood-boosting.
I hope that these tips can help you or someone you love navigate some of the challenges depression can bring.
I’d love to hear what you think of my Crystal Picks in the comments below + any other ideas you’ve had success with in combating the blues. Thank you for sharing in the comments!
Crystal Blessings!
Very good tips indeed 🙂
For me the crystals I go to are:
1) Orange Calcite
2) Smokey Quartz
3) Rose Quartz
Then I normally use a Crystal Infused Oil called Dragon Ley Lines by Child of Gaia 🙂
TY for including your lovely tips, Kyla!
?? awesome thankyou
TY Sweet MaryAnne. ♥
Hi, could you do a video or a list of crystals safe to use in gem elixirs? It seems hard to find an actual list anywhere of qem elixir crystals. Thankyou, and I love your videos. 🙂
Angela I wish I could but with over 4500 different minerals that would be quite an undertaking. Instead I have a list here of the toxic ones to avoid: https://hibiscusmoon.com/resources/toxic-crystals-stones/
Your tips were great. I also enjoyed your video (as always). I’ve used crystals for years because it’s a hobby and helps a lot with my depression. I surround myself in what I call happy things to relieve my anxiety. I have had a long road and mostly all the psychiatric treatments were antidepressants. I can’t take them anymore they have harmed my body. I had a bad time for several years and am now on disability for several diseases and mental. But what really helped me was going back to my crystals, music, meditation, reading and exercise…
Thanks so much, Rita. 🙂 ((HUGS)) to you & wonderful to hear that you’ve found what works best for you now. Much love!♥
Smoky quartz (and also Morion quartz) is my life saver 🙂 I carry one everywhere I go. Helped me so much.
And also smoky citrine and rutile smoky quartz <3
I recently brought home a piece of smoky citrine that had waited several years for me. I LOVE it :-)))
Wauw, love it when you just know that a crystal is ment to be for you <3
Once again thankyou for your very informative and easy to follow advice. Having recently gone through issues yet again I was guided to use pink aragonite and found this to work perfectly, did not remove the issues causing stress however it most definitely removed the emotional effects, I find it very calming and releasing.
My current crystal mojo bag for depression has in it…
1) Citrine
2) Rutilated Quartz
3) Tiger’s Eye
4) Rose Quartz
5) Ametrine
6) Pink Calcite
7) Morganite
8) Kunzite
9) Petalite
10) Amber
If I were Bipolar it would have Lilac Lepidolite in it, but since I’m only unipolar, it doesn’t have anything for extreme stabilization of moods. The little mojo bag stays under my pillow for sleep, in my pocket or purse, but my bigger crystals that I have in my hands when I’m sitting down or even just carrying in the meridians that flow through the palms (the nadis) are…
1) A smokey quartz/amethyst in one that’s also a Brandberg Amethyst with stationary enhydros and phantoms
2) A Golden Healer Lemurian/Golden Lemurian/Golden Lemurian Seed Quartz
3) A hearted-shaped Honey Calcite palm stone
This big combination of the mojo bag and the carry-in-the-hands crystals works quite well for me <3
Would moldavite be helpful?
Love this video! As a part of my final exam for your program I worked with my husband and his depression. He also has anxiety so- double whammy. The combination that we came up with for him was Carnelian, Jade and Hematite. We found the carnelian was a great pick-me-up stone without sending his anxiety through the roof. Jade has a gentle healing feel and hematite to keep the anxiety from shooting him to the moon. I found high quality beads and made them into a necklace for him. He loves it and is seldom seen without it. In combination with other natural remedies, he has seen a significant improvement and is no longer in need of other harmful treatments that were recommended to him. Thank you so much for all you have done for me and my family and I wish you years and years of continued success!!!!
Just wanted to say thats wonderful that your husband is responding well to your crystal combination. I wish I would have been into crystals when I had depresson. May he continue to stay well and happy. Maritza
Hi Sweet Rai & thank you! I miss you guys. And I’m so happy to hear that your hubby has had so much improvement. So many blessings to you all & please say “Hi” to Reese for me.
I looked up Morinon Quartz on the internet, and animal one source said that fire signs (Aries, Sagittarius and Leo( should be careful about using it because it can result in bringing in evil spirits??? Can someone please comment on this. I would be interested in ordering a morion quartz but I’m one of those fire signs. Thanks.
Hi Deanna, I’m not a fire sign, but that sounds a bit erm, (insert word of choice here), to me. I have a lovely chunk of Morion Quartz that called out to me when I was in the shop a few years ago. It lives near my front door, pointing outward, to help protect us and our home.
I know people like to bring their own ‘twist’ to working with crystals and we all have our own experiences, but I believe crystals work with us, to support us and help us on our life/healing journey. Not to attract negativity into our lives – quite the opposite. Maybe see if you can find a piece in a reputable store that you can actually visit to hold the piece and just go with your own intuition 🙂
Smoky quartz is also one generally that is suggested for help with depression, so if what you’ve read about Morion Quartz has put you off that, perhaps another Smoky will find its way to you 🙂
Hey Deanna,
I found that source on the internet, please dont believe any word of it. Crystals are never negative or evil. I totally agree with Angela.
That’s the first time I heard anything like that about a crystal, and thought this would be a reliable forum to pose this question to. I’m going to purchase that crystal. Thanks again.
Forgot to add that I’ve been offering Reiki on a volunteer basis to animals at a local shelter, and I wanted to purchase that crystal to use in this setting. It sounded like a perfect addition to the crystals I’m already using.
That’s so cool, I am a vet myself and really think that crystal healing should be more considered for pets.
That’s great 🙂 I haven’t been able to do it for a while for personal reasons, but I volunteered at my local rescue for some time, sharing Reiki with some of the beautiful dogs there.
Thought I could upload a photo of the Morion Black Quartz I just purchased 🙂 but I can’t. Thanks again for all the responses to my question.
I don’t think you can upload photos here, Deanna, but you can add them to HM’s Facebook page if you use Facebook? Glad you found a piece of Morion 🙂
TY….as always your message and video are timely and inspiring. I would like to add something I have recently discovered about wearing my crystals. I’ve noticed that during the first couple of days wearing the Crystal….you experience the true nature of this Crystal….and how it can work with you personally. You may feel a sense of joy…energy…calm…creativity….empowered…etc. Then after a few days you may not be feeling this same feeling….and left wondering what’s up…and decide to cleanse or change the Crystal you are wearing. Here’s where the …AHAAAA….moment was that came to me. The Crystal in the first few days has shown you how it can work with you…what you can achieve together at this point….then….it is showing you what is not in …ALIGNMENT…with maintaining or achieving this energy or state in your life. This is an important message that the Crystal is communicating to you. It’s important at this point to acknowledge what you are feeling….and begin to ask yourself… what do I have to tweek in my life…what attitude do I have to look at…what can I do…and what do I have to change to fully bring this happiness…or creativity etc. into my life. The Crystal will then fully support your journey…but it is a partnership…and we have to be willing to work with the Crystal joyfully. Intuitively open to embrace whatever messages are being given….even if the energy doesn’t feel pleasant….it is a sign that there is something you can adjust/change for your highest good. Be grateful for the message:)
P.S. ……I should have also mentioned….i.e. working in partnership with your Crystal … when you recognize/identify an attitude/behaviour of yours that is not in your highest good….that is getting in your way of being fully healthy, happy, and whole:)…..your Crystal responds immediately sending you a positive message…in my case I get a jolt of peace and happiness. I then connect with my Crystal through the heart space to confirm. Upon repeating my “epiphany/new understanding”…the jolt of peace/happiness expands to fill my being…and I am bathed in this beautiful energy for an extended
period:). Your Crystal is supporting you energetically on all levels…helping to bring the positive change that you need…all you have to do is be in tune to this positive energetic dialogue. Crystal Communication 101:)
Health, happiness and blessings to all
Have a magical day!
I recently purchased an Enhydro/botanical baltic amber to help keep the depression at bay and I thought how mama earth is that! Too cool.
I’m surprised you didn’t include lepidolite in your list. It’s supposed to be a specific for depression. It contains lithium, which is used to treat bipolar disorder (manic depression). I have bipolar disorder, and I keep a lovely raw piece of lepidolite, bursting with rubelite crystals, by my bedside. My sister has a bracelet I gave her of lepidolite, blue chalcedony, and dumortierite (which is also supposed to be good for depression), to treat her depression which came on when she was diagnosed with early onset dementia.
Yes and Lithium Quartz, which I have been working with. It’s lovely 🙂
There’s a book called Gem Waters, available on Amazon, that I’ve found to be very helpful.
Thank you for this well thought out and written article, Hybiscus Moon. I will save the link for my clients who sometimes feel depression due to their times of illness. It really is so positive and encouraging and reminds me of some of what I myself practiced to move towards overcoming physical limitations in my own past.
Are there mojo bracelets or necklaces available for depression? If so, where can I find them.
Thank you for this video. I work at a psych hospital as an inpatient therapist. I know these crystals will help my patients. Could lithium and lepidolite help as well?
Is there any blue crystals that help with depression or negative thoughts?
Blue crystals that help with depression and anxiety (in my experience) include Lemurian Aquatine Calcite (also called Argentina Blue Onyx), blue smithsonite, kaolinite in quartz (also called Azumar) and Larimar.
