I recently asked the Crystal Hotties on my Facebook Page:
“What are some popular crystal topics that you would like to know about?”
I promised I would take the TOP 2 & turn 1 into a video (working on that this weekend) & the other into a blog post. Here’s that blog post.
I won’t get into what shapes your crystals should be, whether natural, cut or polished here in this post since that’s really a whole other topic for another day. Since this is for a beginner’s kit, my advice is to select the 1 crystal shape or size that calls to you most & still fits within your budget. If that means just getting 1 tumbled stone of each then that will be PERFECT. Go for it!♥
So, what 5 crystals you should have in your beginner’s kit?
Well, that really would vary by individual. But we can determine 5 Must-Haves.
Now, there are so many ways to go with this. But I wanted to keep the list simple using inexpensive & easy-to-obtain crystals. Didn’t want to send you hunting to the ends of the Earth looking for the most rare & expensive crystals I could think of…like this…
Drum roll please…
Your 5 Must Have Crystals
Clear Quartz
1. Clear quartz is a must. It’s so versatile & can be used for ANY purpose so you’ve got to have 1 of these babies.
It’s also a very powerful amplifier! Quartz amplifies any vibrational frequencies, including our own.
Why does quartz work so well with us? B/c clear crystal quartz’ chemical formula is SiO2 aka silica. Scientists have determined that our bodies are partially made of liquid silica crystals. Our cells each have their own EMF (electromagnetic frequency), just as our entire body does, just as Mother Earth does.
Our cells’ EMF is actually maintained by silica! Nobel Prize winner Adolf Butenant, proved that life cannot exist without silica. The average human body holds about 7g of silica, way more than other important minerals such as iron. Yeah! I KNOW!! It’s vital to life.
So needless to say, quartz works with us very well. OK, so that’s my long answer on why quartz is important. Actually…I can go waaaaaaay longer, but I’ll let you off easy this time, Chick Pea.
Citrine
2. Citrine, which is also quartz that’s been heated up in Mother Earth’s kitchen (actually usually starts out as usually amethyst or sometimes smokey quartz) to turn various shades of champagne, yellow & sometimes a very deep iced tea color known as Medeira.
BTW, I don’t feel that your citrine must be a natural 1. A tumbled citrine will work just fine. I have a 2 part video series on what the difference are & why I feel that way here: Part 1 + Part 2.
Citrine’s energy is happy & creative so if you’re feeling down or need to get out of a creative block, reach for this. It gives a great boost to anything to do with finances or prosperity & abundance. Its also a great manifestor with it’s sunny energy.
Rose Quartz
3. Rose quartz, also quartz. Scientists still argue on exactly what elements cause the pink color so we won’t get into that. It grows in masses so you will very rarely find it in a natural point.
It’s a really great stone to have around b/c its energy is very calming, gentle & compassionate….a stone of love; love of all sorts. Whenever you feel the need to feel loved or you need or want to offer compassion, grab your rose quartz. That’s what I do!
Green Aventurine
4. Green aventurine, again…another type of quartz (are we noticing a theme here?) It also grows in masses so no points at all here. I say “green” aventurine b/c it does come in other colors, although more rare. Also, the greens can vary from very dark to much lighter.
This is a very important stone to get your hands on b/c its all about vitality…of anything; health, growth, finances, confidence, friends. Its a common healing stone so a go-to stone for any ailments.
Amethyst
5. Amethyst, yep, another quartz…with traces of iron & manganese giving it that lovely purple color. They come in natural points large & small, also often found in clusters within large geodes…known as druse.
Amethyst is a great stone of protection & purification. Its also known to enhance intuition & helps with the release of addictions…so a great 1 to have around.
So that’s my 5 crystals! Here’s a quick recap list:
- Clear quartz
- Citrine
- Rose quartz
- Green aventurine
- Amethyst
It’s not 100% comprehensive but…with those crystals in your tool box, you can cover a lot of ground, no? If you have others you’d like to add…like I said…there are so many ways we could go with this, please post them in the comments below! 🙂
HUGE HUGS & BIG Spirit Blessings!
I actually already have all of these on a necklace I made along with red adventurine, blue adventurine, tigers eye and hematite. Then my earings are blue lace agate. 😉
Jade, you’re good to go. Love your name. 🙂
I have to COMPLETELY agree….was gonna say Hematite myself and Tiger’s Eye is another GREAT one to have, not sure if it’s for a beginner or not. :S :/ Comments Hibiscus Moon?
Oh, yeah! But I was so shocked when I got to number 4 and didn’t see Amethyst yet!!! Cause Amethyst would be my first or second Must Have 🙂 I think this choices are great!!! thanks a lot! <3
You know I had to get amethyst in there. 😉
I just realize I told a small fib. The citrine isn’t on my necklace. That is part of a geode in my car. 🙂
Also, glad you like the name! 🙂
I’d have to have amethyst, citrine and rose quartz but with the energy of three quartzes around (and I do like threes) I would seek out something different. Then it gets difficult as you said Crystals and I do like haematite and tigers eye. So jade and mookaite.
I have smoky quartez
beatiful amethyst point large .
Plam rose quartz
Sm green Aventurine heart
Sm citrine point
But im very drawn to labradorite
Ammonite
Lately rainvow moonstone… Any reason why this might be?
I loved your recommendations, but I would add black tourmaline. It is protective and very grounding/centering. I have found it to be a very powerful stone. I rarely take mine off and thank you for the advice in an earlier blog about programming it..it worked beautifully when I was under a lot. Of stress, blissings, amberspiral
Bloodstone is one of my must haves. Quartz of all kinds area awesome.
i have a quarry i carry with me of stones, crystals and oils….
Awesome list for beginners. The only thing I would add is a grounding stone of some sort.
TIGER EYE IS A GROUNDING STONE IF NOT TRY SMOKY QUARTz
thank you for sharing, I love gem stones and half of them I do not know there value, I have learned something new today. xxx
I have all these. I noticed someone mentioned that you had posted something on programing crystals but I can’t find it on your site. can you maybe send it to me in and email? love your site! learning lots! 🙂 BB
Hi i am new to all this, my partner of 4 yrs has been with crystals,& divining since very young, (now 54), he also is a gemstone facetor. he has alot of crystals and gem rough, i so want to learn about them and hopefully become a healer. it would be nice to be able to help others. i am looking forward to all hibiscus moon has to offer…many thanks…
These are exactly the crystals I chose before reading the whole article but I would have to use 6. Because I would have added black tourmaline also. If I had to trade one out for it, I would pick it over green aventurine. Selenite would be my next choice.
Hey
Is moldavite powerful. I have a necklace, but do not feel its properties. Also what
T helps to aid in easing arthritis? Thanks
Maureen
Green Adventurine; Lavender; Indigo; Apatite; Blue Lace Agate; Azurite; Green Calcite; Carnelian; Crysocolla; Copper; Hematite; Eilat Stone; Malachite and Black Tourmaline.
Moldavite is an extremely powerful stone, though the more you wear it the less you may become aware of it. It is a strong stone of manifestation. Moldavite is a tektite, and a stone of intense frequency and high vibration.
In ancient times it was thought to be a mystical stone that could bring good luck and fulfillment of wishes.
These natural green crystals are powerful stones for transformation, as it is thought to be the stone known as “The Holy Grail Stone.”
It is one of the best stones to use for psychic protection, as negative entities find it difficult to connect to your aura when you are wearing it.
Wearing this stone is an advantage when you are working with spirit, so you can be sure that what you are making contact with is of ‘the light’. Using this stone in meditation is very powerful.
One of its best assets is that it is a protective stone, and especially if you are working on developing psychic abilities.
Change and spiritual healing are the common elements that this powerful natural crystal stimulates amongst most people, and this may take different forms.
This beautiful green stone can affect any or all of the chakras but it major effect is on the heart chakra, which resonates the vibration of love.
thank you thank you thank you. very much appreciate yesterdays post about stone for week, then notice. todays quartz crystals. I think I am going to put them together outside in the sun this afternoon. I really appreciate the previous note about crystalaholics aghhhhhhhh I am one. but I love em all. thanks again I am so excited to read your posts right through. your generosity is so welcome at this time, thank you
I put amethyst, citrine, rose quart, clear quart in my water bottle and use this water every day. I even cook with this water and I get good energy 🙂
Red Jasper – I use it for any Root Chakra issues.
I also have the same group of crystals that you have suggested. I have been collecting them for years and have not been clear on why I continue to do so.
I have used certain ones during Tarot readings or to aid in focus while meditating.
I am curious about your article on programming my crystals. Will you please tell me where I can find the article you wrote on this subject.
Thank you very much, I enjoy reading your emails as well as your Facebook page.
Cheers!
Very informative. I’m just getting started with crystals and stones.
Great video! I keep a green aventurine in my pocket all day and it makes me feel well. I have many green aventurines and crystals at frankreiserrocksminerals.blogspot.com. Frank’s Beautiful Rocks and Minerals. With my authority from my Master’s degree in biology, I state that without minerals, we would quickly die. For example, halite (NaCl, sodium chloride) and potassium from the mineral sylvite and others are injested as food and vitamins for us to live.
I am new to all this and was sooooo excited that I recently purchased 4 out of the five that were listed… Question, does it matter the size? And if I were them all the time in a necklace?
I just started collecting crystals, this is just good information. Thank you
I have and carry most all these with me daily in my crystal pouch. The only one I have not been carrying is my rose quartz as I need to recharge is energies. I also have a whole lot more to my collection as well. I love seeing your blogs. Amethyst and clear quartz are what my main two pendulums are made out of. I also keep a Himalayan salt rock lamp in almost every room of my house. I am drawn to amethysts. I have an amethyst geode that stands in my living room. Along with clear quartz crystal points throughout my house. I would very much like to get father into the healing nature of crystals and become more natural at it.
so basically you need all different types of quartz then…lol 😉
Perhaps someone ready asked this, but what do you feel are the most trustworthy online stores to purchase crystals?
We love and recommend Earthegy.
http://www.bit.ly/earthegy
If you use HM10 you’ll always save 10% there too!
I personally find that the Sodalite and the Apricot Agate also work well as well as the Azurite. But Amethyst and Rose Quarts are still my 2 faves tho.
Does anyone know of a physical store?
In Pembroke pines, FL
Exactly what my choices would be – thanks for the validation 😉
3 out of 5 is a start. I have a few Clear crystals, a few Amethyst’s and Rose quartz. I have my clears by the Tv to absorb the energy. My Rose in my Bra next to my heart and my Amethyst I have around my neck n around the house….
The first crystal that ever spoke to me was amazonite. I felt I just had to have it, but couldn’t find it anywhere. I got two malas with rose quartz and howlite beads, and realized that I love rose quartz (and also realized I wanted it in a raw form). A couple of months ago, I was looking for a crystal for skin healing and read about selenite. It came to me a few days later (a wand-shaped piece). It was the first crystal that vibrated like crazy in my hands the first time I sat down to meditate with it. And finally, I found amazonite. These days, I’m getting drawn to black tourmaline and raw amethyst (a crystal I’ve always loved). Going to get these soon, and raw rose quartz too 🙂
Good morning! I am stunned with the scope of the information you so generously share through your website. Thank you!
I have just recently started working with crystals, starting with amber which I know is not a crystal, but it’s what put me on the path. It has been a very hit-and-miss process finding the crystals that work for me. So, I was interested to find that I have come to all but one of your top 5 although it’s not that I haven’t tried. The one that interestingly enough does not work for me is amethyst. At best, I get no vibe from it at all. At worst, it makes me quesy or tense to hold it. I was worried that there might be something wrong with my vibration that amethyst, so universally popular, had to be removed from the rest of my crystals.
So, while I do have the other 4, my top 5 includes a lovely piece of angelite which sits at the center of my work and sleep space, casting its calming aura over the room.
Does that make sense to you?
Love to read this! 🙂
As a beginner in crystals, i have Dalmation stone (dalmatian jasper) bracelet to wear everyday .. like the energies very much. Also a pair of Citrine – Rose quartz as a ‘thank you’ stones, and a piece of raw lapis lazuli that surprisingly calms down minds when the night comes.
Now i know that i should buy green aventurine next .. 😉
I was putting together a list for a beginner’s kit for a friend and decided to look up some recommendations. I was very excited to find that I had citrine, rose quartz, clear quartz, and amethyst on my list. The only difference is that rather than green aventurine, I added black tourmaline to my list. I think it is important for beginners to have some sort of grounding stone in a starter kit to keep their heads out of the clouds! I know clear quartz can have that effect on me and I use red jasper to ground myself. Just a suggestion 🙂
Lol. Me too! I’d never thought of it as a quarry but it totally fits and I love it!
I have all of these 5 Crystals Raw & Polished, & a whole lot more 🙂
I would like to know what crystal, crystals you would suggest for Fibromyalgia Syndrome?
Chronic fatigue & chronic pain 24hrs a day, from head to toes. I have had it for over 30 years & use all kinds of crystal but as you are an expert in this field maybe you would have an idea?
Kind Regards
Anita
Smokey quartz! I have a natural smokey phantom wand I just adore! And it’s easy and usually cheap to obtain! A great stone for grounding and just holding! And don’t forget flourite of any color! Another easy stone to get that packs a potent punch!
I am a Aroma touch therapist and would love working on clearing the chakras. Where would you suggest for me to purchase the crystals I would need. I have a lot of polished stones but I would rather have stones that are natural. Just feels like their raw energy would be more powerful.
Dawn I looked at the website. Thank you for sharing. When I can I will be ordering some wonderful crystals.
Have a beautiful day.
Namaste’
Well seeing as I’m new to crystals…this list is perfect for me. I’m actually heading out tomorrow to pick these up.
I am so glad to read all the different experiences with the varied stones. I have been attracted to different crystal since 2006, but I am now really gravitating to them more and more. I have an interesting collection of crystals, and I am exciting to start working with them. I have crystals in almost every room of my house. (still working on that) 🙂 Thank you.
I recently bought Lapis lazuli. It’s my 1st crystal. I hope it’s good enough. ?
I think Carnelian hould have been on there because, its good for cleansing the other crystals when someones touched them, or if the crystals not working anymore. And i think Blue lace agate should be in there 2 cause it helps with stress. Do you know which websites to go on to find out more about crystals?
I love stone like you do,?
I had few of them, its interested to know about them.
Thank you
Black tourmaline to deflect negativity.
What about smoky quartz. It is a protection stone. And a blue stone like lapis or sodalite. That was a good beginning.
I actually have all of these already along with fancy and red japer moss agate pyrite garnet almost every type of calcite and thats just a few to name off not to mention a chakra necklace with the different stones setting on top of clear quartz
Hi hibiscus moon! Thank you for this gift! I truly appreciate the info you have shared with me here. Thank you so much. As for the list. I’m only missing one… Green aventurine… Gotta hit up my local crystal shop ASAP!
Very nice and informative article here. Thanks for the sharing, I also found a useful service for docs merging. I’ve found AltoMerge – online service for files merging. It’s pretty easy to use. You can find it here

Black tourmaline is a must . It’s for grounding and protection. I have one in my pocketbook and in each of my grandkids knapsack . I even keep some in the corners of my rooms. I keep amethyst in our vehicles as well. I do believe in the intention set for whatever stone you plan on using . Namaste
I am just starting out my cousin let me pick out some gemstones that i felt gravitated toward. And they where: Howlite, citrine , red jasper and a dark green gem that im not sure what it is looks like either green jasper or green aventurine from the pictures I’ve seen? What are your thoughts ty.
I’m a beginner also. I love gemstones. Haven’t leaned toward the crystals as of yet . Starting to add them to my jewelry making.
I am trying my best to learn about what are the best crystals to have around me and with me at all times for personal reasons for health reasons for reasons of peace tranquillity calmness and happiness so I’m new to the game I’ll take all the help I can get ladies .

Hi thank you so much for this i am just starting with crystals and found this so informative and helpful xx
I studied with Marcel Vogel…(you know him?) and had the title CRYSTAL ENERGETICS PRACTIONWR but haven’t done much lately.
I’ve studied with Marcel Vogel and held the title CRYSTAL ENERGETICS PRACTIONER.
I’ve always been drawn to the beauty of crystals and have just started to use them, starting with a couple of salt lamps. I have Amethyst, Citrine and Rose Quartz as a starter but will most definitely be adding the Green Aventurine and Clear Quartz very soon. So thrilled to have been referred to your blog and Facebook page. Thank you!
I think it’s important to have a good grounding stone like black tourmaline. Also, some kind of opal… I prefer Labradorite. Good list, I already have them 🙂
I have collected rocks and crystals for many years but done nothing with them. I have purchased a bag of crystals at a gift store. All very small can’t tell what most of them are also bought a starter kit from Llewellyn’s with a book to start working with them. Have a crystal Bible so I can look up what each stone/ crystal is good for. Love your emails wish I could afford your classes. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. Love & light
How about labradorite? I’m over a month into my practice but still haven’t had a projection. But labradorite is a very calming stone and I’ve heard it helps with astral projection. It got me further into the vibrational stage than I ever had gotten in all my other practices. Then I felt a shaking vibrational very intense feeling in my third eye. Agter that I saw a bunch of dots that just changed color. It’s a very relaxing stone.
Hi. I went to an MBS fair yesterday and was really compelled to buy a large expensive piece of Spirit Quartz. It wasn’t the prettiest one there yet I knew I had to have it (even though I would thought i would ever spend that much!) I’m not sure why or where to go with it next but absolutely love my crystals. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
I love my blue lace agate! I have one I bath with for arthritis relief and one I carry along with amythest and a clear quartz crystal. I have a small tourmaline as well.
I love the first 5 chrystals you have chosen the only one I have is a rose quarts which I keep by my bed so tomorrow I should get some money in my bank and I will get the others I’m going to put them in a clear Chrystal bowl I think it would be very interesting to see what ones people pick up and play with unless you have to put them in certain places of the home but Thankyou so much whilst I was reading a grab and get present came up I quickly typed my name and email do you know what if I have won something it will be First I’ve never won anything in my life and at the moment I’m feeling so down and lonely even though the house is full I think the Chrystals are good for me I’m so glad I stumbled across your site ????????????????☯️????????❤️
I have a small collection of crystals maybe 20-30 including all of your top 5. I would like to ask what grid & stones you would recommend for aquiring a new home.
Awesome.. I have all bit the Green Aventurine crystal. Thanks so much!
Sharon
I’m testing this Friday which stones would be good for me to comprehend an concentrate
I like wearing the crystals, my baby boy let’s me wear his and I went on a road trip, I can feel difference, when I have it with me it when I do not
Selenite is a gem that I would have or own in my home.
Although it is labeled as a spiritstone , a teacher’s sidekick
I feel it has a great ability to guard your home and it’s private athmosphere. And good to have EVEN you being ‘anewbie’
I have been trying to find your newest crystal kits how can I buy them?
Hey I am brand new to crystals I have never even touched one so has any one got any advice to start?
